Internship at Vormen.be

My internship at Vormen in Belgium was an incredibly enriching experience that significantly expanded my skills and understanding of the design process. During this time, I had the opportunity to work on several exciting projects and accompany them through all phases of the design process—from the initial sketch to the prototype and communication with manufacturers.

I learned what matters in the planning and production of furniture and was able to work directly on the implementation in the workshop. A particular highlight was the development of a low table with a tabletop that curves concavely inward in three dimensions. The production of this table presented us with several challenges, which we mastered together with a metalworker. We planned to shape the tabletop under tension and then weld it. Specially for this I planned out a vacuum mold, Keeping the sheet in place while the reinforcements are welded on.

This technique of shaping sheet metal under tension into a specific form allowed us to create shapes that would not be possible with conventional industrial machines. At the same time, we gained stability. This experience inspired me tremendously and laid the foundation for my diploma project.
